Mediators call for truce in South Sudan

Mediators have warned that continued fighting in South Sudan could wreck peace talks between the government and rebels loyal to the former Vice-President Riek Machar.

Negotiations are due to begin in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, but so far the rebels have not agreed to end hostilities.

The head of the UN peacekeeping mission, Hilde Johnson, has called for an end to the fighting, saying South Sudan is at a crossroads but can still be saved.

James Copnall reports.
