Muammar Gaddafi 'shot down Libyan jet' in 1992

The former Libyan ambassador to Washington DC, Ali Aujali, has claimed former dictator Muammar Gaddafi shot down a Libyan airliner, killing 157 people, in 1992.

There have been calls to reopen the investigation into Flight 1103, which crashed near Tripoli airport close to the fourth anniversary of the Lockerbie bombing.

In a Storyville documentary on BBC Four, Mr Aujali claims Gaddafi was responsible for the incident, which he hoped would show the world that Libya could not operate aircraft without spare parts denied to them by sanctions.

"Can you even imagine this? He killed his own people... he shot down a Libyan jet just to tell the world that the sanctions were hurting," says Mr Aujali.
