South Sudan tops 2014 fragile state index

The world's newest country, South Sudan, has come top of the list of fragile states in this year's index released by the US-based Fund for Peace.

Somalia - which came top for the past six years - fell to second place, followed by CAR, DR Congo, Sudan and Chad.

The co-director of the Fragile States Index, JJ Messner, said South Sudan's problems were chronic instability, fractured leadership and the growing ethnic nature of the violence in the country.
