South Africa footballer Senzo Meyiwa shot dead

Police have confirmed that South Africa's football captain Senzo Meyiwa was shot dead when two armed men broke into a house he was visiting in a township south east of Johannesburg.

Reports said Meyiwa may have been trying to defend his girlfriend, Kelly Khumalo.

It is thought that the suspects demanded the player's mobile phone and a shot was fired after an "altercation".

A hunt is under way for the attackers, who fled on foot.
