Diabetes - Africa's 'ticking time-bomb'

The World Health Organization says that countries in Sub-Saharan Africa are heading towards new epidemics of diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and cancer.

The global health watchdog says non-communicable diseases - meaning they can't be passed from person-to-person - are a ticking time bomb that are being ignored in favour of infectious diseases like HIV and tuberculosis.

So all this week BBC Focus on Africa puts the spotlight on NCDs, the so-called silent killers.

We begin in South Africa where, as Mohamed Allie reports, diabetes continues to be a health burden.
