‘We deserve freedom’: Election delay sparks protests, arrests in Senegal

Riot police fired tear gas at crowds protesting against plans to postpone the 25 February presidential election.

The delay is a first for Senegal - a country often viewed as a bastion of democracy in West Africa - and will see President Macky Sall remain in power until December this year.

Opposition lawmakers attempted to stop the bill from passing parliament on Monday. Some were forcibly removed from the chamber by police.
