'Horrific situation' at Sydney nursing home fire

Three elderly people have died in a nursing home fire in Sydney, Australian officials have confirmed.

About 50 people were injured, some seriously, in the blaze at the the Quakers Hill Nursing Home, in the north-west of the city.

Nearly 100 fire crews battled the flames and plumes of thick smoke which engulfed the home.

New South Wales' fire and rescue commissioner Greg Mullins said firefighters were faced with a "horrific situation", while police superintendent Robert Redfern voiced fears that the death toll could rise.
