China's social entrepreneurs picking up slack

In China, a devastating earthquake in the southwestern province of Sichuan in 2008 led to a brief boom in corporate and personal giving.

But last year, a high-profile scandal involving a government-run charity caused donations to dry up.

According to Forbes magazine, total giving by China's top 100 philanthropists plunged by 41% in response, mirroring wider social mistrust in state institutions.

With citizens more reluctant to give to conventional charities, China's social entrepreneurs are picking up the slack.
