Hague: UK 'in favour' of lifting Burma sanctions

British Foreign Secretary William Hague has said the UK supports the lifting of sanctions against Burma - but that the European Union's work in the country is "not remotely finished".

He was speaking just before an EU statement lifted trade, economic and individual sanctions - but left an arms embargo in place.

Last month the BBC obtained police video showing officers standing by while Buddhist rioters attacked Muslims in Meiktila - human rights groups say the lifting of sanctions reduces the leverage the EU has on Burma.
