Japan to defend 'scientific whaling' at UN court

Japan is to make its case in support of "scientific whaling" at the International Court of Justice on Monday.

The country kills hundreds of minke whales in the Southern Ocean every year but Australia and New Zealand have raised the issue at the United Nations' highest court in a bid to stop them.

Australia has accused Japan of continuing commercial whaling under the "cloak" of scientific study, saying such work can be conducted without killing whales.
