Burma marks 25 years since people's uprising

Public commemorations are taking place in Burma, also known as Myanmar, to mark the 25th anniversary of the uprisings which launched the country's pro-democracy movement.

Hundreds of thousands took part in the protests, but within six weeks at least 3,000 protesters were dead, thousands were jailed and the military was back in control.

But now, under a reformist government, veterans of the 1988 uprising have come back to Rangoon to mark the events and Aung San Suu Kyi is expected to give a speech.

Jonathan Head reports from Rangoon.
