Antarctic ship rescue hampered by ice

A Chinese icebreaker vessel has failed to reach a scientific ship trapped in pack ice off East Antarctica.

The Russian Academic Shokalskiy, which is being used by the Australasian Antarctic Expedition, has been stuck in dense ice since Christmas Day.

A more powerful icebreaker is expected to free the Russian ship on Sunday.
