Obama in Asia: Protests flare at Philippines military deal

US President Barack Obama has said the US is not trying to contain, or counter China, just hours after he agreed a new defence agreement with the Philippines.

The deal gives US forces access to Philippine military bases for the next 10 years. The announcement was met with protests on the streets of Manila.

It also comes as Manila is engaged in a territorial dispute with Beijing over islands in a large swathe of the South China Sea.

Rupert Wingfield-Hayes reports.
