Pope Francis travels to northern Sri Lanka

Pope Francis has become the first pope to travel to the Tamil region of northern Sri Lanka to show solidarity with the victims of the country's 26-year civil war.

The pontiff visited a church that was on the front line of the war between government troops and Tamil separatists.

Earlier, huge crowds attended the canonisation of Sri Lanka's first saint, Father Joseph Vaz, in a ceremony in Colombo.

Caroline Wyatt reports from Sri Lanka.
