Iwo Jima 70 years on: US veterans return to battle island

On 19 February 1945 the US launched a land invasion of the heavily defended Japanese island of Iwo Jima.

It was the start of one of the bloodiest battles of the World War Two.

Dozens of veteran United States marines have gathered on the Pacific island to mark the seventieth anniversary of the battle.

They were taken to the volcanic peak of Mount Suribachi, where a photo of marines raising the flag became an iconic image of America's victory over Japan.
