RAF veteran tells BBC of the destruction in Hiroshima

After the devastation caused by the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, 40,000 British and Commonwealth troops were posted to Japan to help support the US occupation and reconstruction effort.

Ernest Astley was a young Spitfire engineer at the time and was among the first British people to witness the destruction first hand.

He has been telling BBC News how he ended up being sent to Japan.
