Afghanistan city Kunduz 'surrounded for much of the year'

Afghan government officials say hundreds of Taliban fighters and their allies have attacked the strategic northern city of Kunduz from several directions. Residents have stayed indoors since the attack began before dawn, describing their terror on social media.

The Afghan government says several militants and two policemen have been killed. Ahmed Rashid, a journalist and expert on the Taliban from Lahore says many people have been fleeing the city in the last couple of weeks.
