Xi pledge on 'women's development' criticised amid activist crackdown

Chinese President Xi Jinping is facing harsh criticism for a UN conference promise on Sunday to "reaffirm our commitment to gender equality and women's development" after a recent crackdown on female activists.

Lu Jun, a Chinese activist now living in New York, is the director of an anti-discrimination organisation which was shut down by Chinese police earlier this year.

He describes the arrest and jailing of some of the women - his colleagues - as well as the wider repression of activists, NGO workers and lawyers in China.
