India election: Huge turnout in marathon poll

Election Commission officials in India have said that voter turnout in the country's marathon election was a record 66.38%.

The poll began on 7 April and has been held in nine phases for security and logistical reasons. With 814 million eligible voters, it is the world's biggest exercise in democracy.

Speaking to the BBC, Akshay Rout, director general of the Indian Election Commission, described the election as "extremely satisfying" because it had reinforced the electoral system and democracy in his country.
