As reality TV star-turned-politician Donald Trump continues his bid for the Republican nomination in the US, another race thousands of miles away is also proving the political appeal of show-business.

Movie stars have been dominating politics in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu for more than five decades.

But what makes former actors from the silver screen such successful political candidates in real-life?
