India demands 'due place' in any UK trade deal

India's Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman says Britain is no longer treating India as an old friend.

Britain is seeking a new trading relationship with India following the Brexit vote and UK Prime Minister Theresa May is in the country for talks.

Trade and immigration are linked. If the UK wants better access to Indian markets, the government in Delhi wants a looser approach to UK work and student visas.

Mrs Sitharaman said Indian industry felt let down by Britain's visa rules. The status of India as an old friend of Britain had changed to a "tight professional engagement". India was now looking at its own strengths and demanding "due place" in any trade deal.
