China democracy activist Wuer Kaixi on attending Nobel awards
China has stepped up its campaign to try to discredit the Nobel committee, ahead of the Peace Prize ceremony to honour jailed dissident Liu Xiaobo.
The foreign ministry insisted Mr Liu had been convicted not only for his calls for more democracy but had actively tried to subvert state power.
Tiannanmen Square protester and democracy activist Wuer Kaixi, who is attending the ceremony, defended the Nobel committee's decision.
Speaking on BBC Newsnight, he said he believed the committee often made "controversial decisions", but that this year they had made the right one.
