Archive: Russia admits Kursk submarine crew are dead

On 12 August 2000 Russia's Northern Fleet Command lost contact with the Kursk nuclear submarine.

The craft and its 118 crew had been taking part in exercises in the Barents Sea when it sank.

Despite initially refusing international help in the rescue attempt, Russia eventually called on the UK and Norway for expert assistance.

But more than a week after the incident, the Russian navy had to announce that all hands had been lost in the accident.
