Close-Up: Munich's 'outdoor living rooms'

This BBC News series focuses on aspects of life in countries and cities around the world. What may seem ordinary and familiar to the people who live there can be surprising to those who do not.

It's an annual beer-drinking ritual like no other: Munich's Oktoberfest, which starts this week, sees thousands of people spending all day in outdoor beer gardens to sink a few litres of the stuff.

But for Bavarians, it's nothing unusual. Whenever the sun shines, whole families take to one of the city's 180 biergartens with a picnic - to sit, eat, drink and make new friends.

James Dagwell discovers Munich's "outdoor living rooms" - guided by Florian Dering of the Munich Stadtmuseum.
