Dutch swimmers brave the elements with annual dip in sea

Thousands of swimmers in the Netherlands have braved freezing temperatures to take part in an annual dip in the North Sea.

The event, at Scheveningen, is held on every New Year's Day. The tradition started in 1960 when members of a local swimming club decided to start the year by plunging into the water.

Everyone taking part is treated to a cup of warm soup when they return to dry land.
