One of Germany's most popular politicians has dismissed accusations of plagiarism as "fanciful", after claims he passed off others' work as his own in his PhD thesis.

Defence minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg got top marks for his 2006 law dissertation from the University of Bayreuth.

However the Suddeutsche Zeitung claims several long passages in the thesis seem to have just been lifted from other people's work.
