New volcanic eruption shuts Iceland airport

The Icelandic authorities have shut the country's main airport after the nation's most active volcano, Grimsvotn, began erupting.

A plume of smoke has risen 20km (12 miles) into the sky.

Iceland's Meteorological Office says the eruption should not cause widespread disruption to air traffic.

Simon Calder, travel editor for the Independent said "the eruption has been pretty fierce".
