Michael D Higgins to be next Irish president

Labour Party candidate Michael D Higgins will be Ireland's ninth president, despite being a distant second in polls just a few days before Thursday's election.

Mr Higgins received 701,101 first-preference votes - not enough to win outright in the first round, but enough to see his closest rival, one-time favourite Sean Gallagher give up the battle.

Mark Simpson reports from Dublin.
