Europe welcomes planned Greek austerity measures

EU leaders have welcomed the Greek parliament's decision to approve further austerity measures as part of its efforts to receive a 130bn euro bailout package.

Economics commissioner Olli Rehn urged Greek officials to "take ownership" and fully implement the reforms, demanded by the EU in return for a huge bailout.

But the proposals have prompted massive protests throughout Greece, with buildings in Athens being set oon fire and police having to use tear gas to disperse angry demonstrators.
