Spain budget prompts nighttime protests in Madrid

Protesters have gathered in their thousands outside the Spanish parliament building where the 2013 budget is being debated.

Pay cuts and tax rises are expected to contribute towards 39bn euro in savings, as part of a plan to cut 150bn euro from government spending between 2012 and 2014.
