Voting ends on first day of Italy's election

Voting has ended on the first day of Italy's general election - seen as crucial for tackling the country's economic problems as well as for the eurozone.

A second and final day of voting will be held on Monday. First results are expected in the early evening.

The election was called two months ahead of schedule, after Mr Berlusconi's party withdrew its support for Mario Monti's technocratic government.

Gavin Hewitt reports.
