New Pope Cardinal Bergoglio appears in St Peter's Square

Cardinal Bergoglio of Argentina has been elected as the new head of the Catholic Church.

White smoke billowed from the Sistine Chapel chimney shortly after 1800 GMT, signalling the new Pope, the 266th, had been elected.

Crowds in Vatican City cheered and bells rang out as the new Pontiff appeared on the balcony of St Peter's Basilica to make his first official address.
