US officials demand action on Magnitsky death
The US has published a list of 18 alleged human rights abusers from Russia and neighbouring states, who will now face sanctions agreed by Congress in December.
It holds sixteen of them responsible for the death in Russian custody of the human rights lawyer, Sergei Magnitsky.
Mr Magnitsky died in a Russian jail in 2009 after being arrested for tax evasion.
Russia has warned that it will publish a commensurate list of Americans it accuses of rights violations.
White House spokesman Jay Carney has said that those involved in the lawyer's death need to be punished.
