Cannes film festival hit by jewellery theft

French police are investigating after jewellery was stolen from a hotel in Cannes.

The jewels were to be loaned to stars appearing at the famous annual film festival on the French Riviera.

They were taken from the hotel room of an employee of exclusive Swiss jewellers Chopard in the early hours of Friday morning.

Police initially said that more than $1m (£650,000; 777,000 euros) worth of jewels were taken, but Chopard have since released a statement saying the stolen jewels were worth considerably less than had been reported.
