UK faces European Court over benefits for EU nationals

The European Commission is taking the British government to court for alleged discrimination after it refused to pay welfare benefits to some immigrants from the EU.

The Commission, which checks compliance with EU laws, argues that an extra test applied to some benefits in Britain is unfair.

Dr Martin Kahanec from the Central European University, in a joint study with three researchers from the Institute for the Study of Labor in Bonn, has looked at whether a country's employment benefits can lead to an increase in immigration.

He told the BBC that research shows migrants "do not respond to welfare generosity".
