Francois Hollande confirms split from Valerie Trierweiler

French President Francois Hollande has confirmed he has separated from his partner Valerie Trierweiler, telling French news agency AFP their "shared life" had ended.

Two weeks ago Closer magazine published photos which appeared to show Mr Hollande had been having an affair with an actress, Julie Gayet.
