Spanish abortion law prompts women's group protests

A draft law to ban abortion in Spain in all but a small number of circumstances has sparked angry protests by women's action groups.

The new legislation would only permit abortions in cases of rape or when the mother's health was at serious risk.

The government has hinted it will modify the draft law, following protests, but opinion polls suggest that it is still likely to lose the ruling Popular Party votes.
