Who is winning the battle of Kiev?

BBC Newsnight correspondent Gabriel Gatehouse went out on the sniper-prone streets of Kiev on Thursday to find out what was going on in the Ukrainian capital.

Three hours of fierce fighting in the city's Independence Square left bodies strewn on the ground.

Protesters hurled petrol bombs and paving stones to drive off security forces while police - some of them positioned on rooftops - fired on demonstrators.

Our correspondent says he saw what was almost certainly a protester shooting out of the window of the Ukraine Hotel, where many foreign correspondents are based.
