King Juan Carlos of Spain to abdicate

King Juan Carlos of Spain has decided to abdicate, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has announced.

The 76-year-old has ruled since 1975 and pending a constitutional amendment his son Prince Felipe, 45, will take over the throne.

The BBC's Guy Hedgecoe said he was a "huge figure of democracy" in Spain.
