King Juan Carlos of Spain announces his abdication

King Juan Carlos of Spain has announced his abdication after ruling the country for 39 years.

The 76-year-old said it was time for him to "pass the baton" to his son Prince Felipe, 45, who he said would "open a new era of hope".
