King Juan Carlos of Spain is abdicating after nearly 40 years on the throne.

Hugely popular for most of his reign, the 76-year-old has had health problems in recent years.

And support for him waned when it was discovered he took a lavish elephant hunting trip to Botswana in April 2012, in the middle of Spain's financial crisis.
