Francois Hollande confirms French air strikes on IS in Iraq

France has carried out its first air strikes against Islamic State (IS) militants in Iraq.

The president's office said French aircraft had hit jihadist positions in the north-east, adding that there would be further raids in the coming days.

Speaking to reporters, President Francois Hollande said the aim of the aerial operations was to ''weaken the organisation of the terrorists''.
