Schulz: UK and EU 'stronger together'

European Parliament President Martin Schulz has said that he hopes the UK will remain a "fully-fledged" member of the European Union, as both parties will be stronger as a result.

Speaking to the BBC, Mr Schulz said that he was not worried about the prospect of a referendum in the UK and believed that the British people would vote to maintain the status quo.

UK Prime Minister David Cameron has promised to renegotiate the terms of Britain's relationship with Europe ahead of a referendum in 2017.
