Turkey election: Izmir, a secular stronghold

In Turkey's last election, the centre-left Republican People's Party, or CHP, took 44% of the vote in Izmir - more than double its national share.

It is aiming higher for the poll on 7 June, as many in the city fear the growing conservatism of the current government.

Staunchly secular, the CHP is the party of modern Turkey's founding father, Kemal Ataturk, but under the 12-year rule of the Islamist-rooted AK Party, Turkey has fundamentally changed, leaving Izmir increasingly isolated.
