What happens to migrants rescued from the Mediterranean?

More than a 1,800 people have drowned in the Mediterranean this year, as migrants in overcrowded boats try to make the journey to mainland Europe.

The Italian coastguard and navy ships have rescued hundreds of people over the past few days.
