Moscow orthodox church plans create tense standoff

Russia's Orthodox Church, which was suppressed in Soviet times, has been experiencing a steady revival under President Vladimir Putin.

It is planning to build 200 new churches in Moscow, arguing that congregations are growing again.

Supporters of that programme include a nationalist-religious movement known as 40 x 40, which associates the rebirth of the church with Russia's resurgence as a world power.

But the construction of one new chapel in a Moscow park has sparked a rare, round-the-clock protest by local residents, as Sarah Rainsford found out.
