Ukrainians remember Nazi atrocities
Although the Holocaust is officially recognised and taught in schools in Ukraine, what actually happened to Jews in individual communities is very rarely discussed.
This silence is ending, however. A group of Ukrainian and international organisations, including the German government and the American Jewish Committee, recently held ceremonies to dedicate monuments in five western Ukrainian villages where mass shooting took place, and local populations are taking interest in finding out what happened.
One survivor, Ludwika Schein, who now lives in San Francisco, returned to Rava-Ruska, the town where she was born, to witness how prayers were finally said for her parents and brothers, who were killed there.
