Denmark's Espersen: 'Fair' to confiscate migrant assets

The Danish parliament has backed a controversial proposal to confiscate asylum seekers' valuables to pay for their upkeep. The plan was supported by the second largest party and power-broker in parliament - the Danish People's Party.

The DPP is seen by its critics as xenophobic, but by its supporters as the home of true Danish values.

Stephen Sackur asked the party's deputy chairman and foreign affairs spokesman Soren Espersen to respond to international criticism over the new law.

Mr Espersen strongly rejected suggestions that there was any comparison between the confiscation policy and how Jews were treated as they left Nazi Germany in the 1930s.
