Italian architect says earthquake deaths made him 'mad'

Italy's most famous living architect, Renzo Piano, has said that the 300 lives lost in last week's earthquake could have been saved.

Mr Piano, who is best known for designing the Shard skyscraper in London and the Pompidou Centre in Paris, told BBC Radio 4's The World at One it made him "mad" that an earthquake of this size had killed so many and he was "sure" those deaths could have been avoided.

Italy's prime minister has asked Mr Piano to help with the reconstruction.
