Bruckner: France could vote extreme left or right

Pascal Bruckner, a French writer and philosopher, has told BBC Hardtalk's Stephen Sackur that what happened in the UK and the US - people sending strong messages to their elites by voting for Donald Trump or Brexit - could reproduce itself in the upcoming French presidential elections.

French voters are "puzzled, they’re indecisive and they might bend over the saviour," whether from the extreme left or the extreme right, "who could carry out their anger," he said.

In France like in many other European countries, the working class went from the Communist Party to the far right because they felt abandoned by the elites, explained Mr Bruckner.

Hardtalk can be seen on BBC World News and the BBC News Channel. You can see the interview in full on BBC iPlayer (UK only).
